Reimagining Community Participation in Landscape Architecture and Planning
Landscape architects and planners are often expected to engage local people in design processes. This expectation grows from legal requirements and, increasingly, from the notion that good design grows from engaging users in the design process. Indeed, this is the basis for the human-centered design focus we see so much about today.
But this set of expectations raises a number of questions:
Where are designers to find information about HOW to effectively engage non-experts in the design process?
Are there best practices -- or even most appropriate methods -- for participation?
What should we expect the outcomes of this participation process to be?
We seek to answer these questions, by creating a framework and toolkit with real-life case studies of projects that have engaged in innovative public and community participation.
